When it introduced the operating system iOS 6, Apple also included an ad tracking method called “Identifier for Advertising” or IDFA, which is akin to a cookie. The default setting on iOS 6 devices is to enable this ad tracking. However, there is a way to turn it off and here’s how.
- Go to the Settings app.
- You might expect that this would be a “Privacy” setting but it is not. Tap the “General” category.
- Find the entry “Advertising” and tap that.
- Change the setting on the slider “Limit Ad Tracking” from OFF to ON as shown in the figure below. It may sound backwards but note that the setting ON turns the IDFA ad tracking off.
Because advertisers have multiple ways of tracking you, you may still be tracked in other ways than by IDFA, but you should see a lessening of ads tailored to your usage habits. This setting does not block ads but should help keep what you do online a little more private.
