T’O’N compares Nvidia and Sony’s screen technology to find the sharpest, richest and brightest display currently in the market
Nvidia’s PRISM display, when it was first introduced with the Tegra 3 processor, gave a new meaning to power-efficient screens. Now Sony is out with its own Triluminos 1080p display that promises clarity and depth never seen before. Which of the two is the better display? We find out.
Nvidia’s PRISM or Pixel Rendering Intensity and Saturation Management display technology is most commonly found on devices that are powered by the tech giant’s Tegra 3 processors. This technology is known for its efficient use of power. Though it uses the battery life of a gadget judiciously, it does so without compromising on the quality of the display.
PRISM works by reducing a mobile gadget’s backlight power while enhancing its pixel colour at the same time. In this way, it is able to ensure the same visual quality with a significantly extended battery life. Nvidia uses this technology to detect what sort of pressure a stylus is exerting on the screen when used for writing. It’s software then adjusts the stroke size accordingly. The system works the same way in order to erase what is written on the display as well.
Sony’s Triluminos display is known for its ability to reproduce ‘true, natural colours’ that appear with the same depth and richness as they do in the real world. One of the most new-age devices to come with the Triluminos screen technology is the Xperia Z Ultra phablet. Its display makes it the perfect device for watching videos and surfing the web while on the move.
The trick behind the brightness and depth of the Triluminos display lies in how it uses intelligent backlight technology. As compared to LED backlighting, it reproduces more tones and textures that result in purer, more distinct colours.
